Lappeenranta Academic Library provides help and guidance for doing research. Open science and open publishing are constantly evolving and library is keen to keeping up with the process. We asked our researchers, which topics in open science are the most interesting and which issues rise more questions.
Teemu Turunen-Saaresti – Avoimuuden avulla yhteistyöhön ja -julkaisuihin
LUT School of Energy systemsin apulaisprofessori Teemu Turunen-Saaresti kertoo, että hänen alallaan energiatekniikassa on keskeisiä lehtiä, jotka eivät ole Open Access -lehtiä (OA) eli avoimesti saatavilla. Alan OA-lehdet ovat enimmäkseen tuntemattomampia ja niissä julkaisevat paljon aasialaiset tutkijat. Hänen schoolissaan ei myöskään ole ostettu artikkeleita avoimiksi eli ei ole käytetty niin sanottua hybridi-julkaisemista, mitä LUT ja rahoittajatkaan eivät suosittele.
ResearchGate tiedonjakoväylänä
Turunen-Saarestille avoimuutta edustaa ResearchGate, jonne hän laittaa tietoja julkaisuistaan, enimmäkseen niin, että sitä kautta kiinnostuneet voivat pyytää tutkijalta julkaisua, mikä onkin luvallisesti varmin tapa toimia. Turunen-Saaresti ei ole rinnakkaistallentanut julkaisujaan LUT:n julkaisuarkistoon, LUTPubiin, mutta olisi siitä kiinnostunut, jos se olisi tutkijalle vaivatonta. ”Rinnakkaistallentamisessa hankalalta tuntuu siinä vaadittavien versioiden (post print/final draft) hallinta”, Turunen-Saaresti kertoo.
B2SHARE-data-arkisto kiinnostaa kansainvälistymisen näkökulmasta
Turunen-Saaresti on kiinnostunut jatkossa tallentamaan tutkimusaineistoja avoimesti EUDAT-palveluihin kuuluvaan B2SHARE-data-arkistoon. Turunen-Saarestin tutkimusryhmä on myös kiinnostunut jakamaan avoimesti tietoa tutkimusinfrastaan (tutkimusvoimalaitos) siten, että tänne LUT:hen voisi tulla muualta tutkijoita tekemään mittauksia vastaavasti kuin hänen yksiköstään käydään muun muassa Stuttgartissa ja Hannoverissa. Tällöin yhteisjulkaisujen tekokin voisi helpottua.
Tutkimuksen näkyvyyteen liittyen Turunen-Saaresti toivoi tutkimusprojekteille kotisivualustaa, jonka voisi itse helposti päivittää ja missä voisi jakaa tietoa tutkimuksista.
Googlelta vastaus
Meitä kirjastossa tietenkin kiinnosti, mistä Turunen-Saaresti oli saanut tietoa esimerkiksi EUDAT-palveluista. Vastaus oli Google. Hänellä oli kokemus, että tutkija helpoimmin hakee tietoa suoraan verkosta, eikä tule kysyneeksi kirjastosta tai lähde etsimään tietoa kirjaston kotisivuilta. Dr. Katharina Fellnhofer – Open Access is a citation booster
Dr. Katharina Fellnhofer is a Research Visitor at LUT School of Business and Management. Katharina’s field of science is Entrepreneurship, where open access (OA) publishing is increasingly important. In particular, in the H2020 project, where she is engaged in, all publications should be openly available.
Open Access (OA) experiences
Katharina has two gold OA (in open journals) and several green OA (self-archiving after embargo period) publications. Katharina uses Zenodo as an open repository for her publications, which is quite wide spread. She also has a personal page on Research Gate. She would be interested in opportunities of parallel publishing in LUT Pub repository as well, though she was not informed about it earlier.
Advantages of open access publishing and open science
Katharina believes that open access publishing brings many advantages, such as:
- interaction with society: everybody has access to your publications, and it helps to build public trust in your research;
- facility to career profile (together with ORCID);
- citation booster: some publications get cited immediately.
Katharina does not see any disadvantages of OA.
Open data
In her research area, Katharina collects data mainly herself. There are only few interesting open data available for entrepreneurship – for example, GEM Global Entrepreneurship Monitor.
In the H2020 project, Katharina shares data with partners in the project own cloud.
Good ways to promote open science and open access publishing at LUT
Katharina thinks that university should build some incentives and provide little reward to researchers for open science. Publishing in open access journals also requires additional funding to cover publishing fees.
Another point is awareness building about advantages of open access publishing, of which increasing citations is the most important.
Research data management plan: “A bit more work, but it is worth it in the long run”
Research data management plan – is a precondition by most funders nowadays. It supports research to keep everything under control (for example, data protection issues). Researcher needs to elaborate a good plan once and can take advantage of it in other projects just by adopting it to new conditions.
Dr. Ashvinkumar Chaudhari – via OA scientific message can reach everyone
Dr. Ashvinkumar Chaudhari is a Postdoctoral Researcher at LUT School of Engineering Sciences. He uses open source computer software for computer simulations. His data is different from other types of data in a way that such data generation requires mainly computing power and time (in addition to scientific skills of course) – CPU time: from about six months to one year to reproduce a dataset. Use of open source software results in minimal financial expenses. Produced large data sets are stored in CSC environment storage system. Long-term preservation of such datasets poses challenges due to lack of space. Existing data files have already exceeded the maximum quotas in CSC system.
In Ashvin’s field of research, opening data for others would not bring much value, because no one can understand the data unless he or she uses the same software. Published conclusions of the research work are the most valuable.
Open access (OA) publishing
Ashvin favors open access publishing because of its scientific value: it is accessible to everyone which results in bigger audience for research work and will help to produce more citations eventually. He gives an example of a paper by other scientists in his field: within 1-2 years the paper got over 50 citations. Ashvin has five completely OA publications in journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings (JUFO level-1). One of his OA papers was viewed over 300 times within a few months.
Publishing in new OA journals also gives opportunity to network within new scientific community and get new readers especially form the universities which are not subscribed to many international journals/publishers. Scientific message can reach everyone, because, for example, scientists from developing countries sometimes don’t have access to many international subscription journals.
Ashvin also uploads final drafts of his papers without journal logos to own page on Research Gate. Challenge with Gold OA publishing (in OA journals) is that it is expensive. Costs of OA journal fees were covered by Ashvin’s lab, the CEID centre.
